For more than six decades, MEDARVA Healthcare has been impacting the greater Richmond community by providing charity care and services to multiple organizations. These services are a way for the organization to give back and to promote overall health, education and well-being throughout Richmond's communities in need. Prevent Blindness and CrossOver Ministries are just two of the many community-based programs we support.
This year's free colonoscopy day was a great success!

This free colonoscopy day screening was held Saturday, September 17. MEDARVA Stony Point Surgery Center donated the use of its facility, equipment and the expertise of its medical professionals to individuals who may not otherwise be able to afford such an important prevention method as a colonoscopy.
The free colon screenings were part of a partnership with Dr. Andy Vorenberg, as well as Access Now, Crossover Ministries, and Hitting Cancer Below the Belt. Respected gastroenterologist Dr. Giles Robertson also assisted with the colon screenings donating his time as one of his final charitable acts before officially retiring. GI Pathology also donated its lab and biopsy services for the event.
Colon cancer is the second leading cause of death for both men and women in the United States but is also the most treatable form of cancer if detected early. It is the third most commonly diagnosed cancer and according to the American Cancer Society, with more than 137,000 people diagnosed each year.
“For some of the individuals receiving screenings, having a colonoscopy isn’t an option because they don’t have the resources to pay for it,” said Sally Graham, executive director of the Goochland Free Clinic, which is referring patients to Access Now so they can be screened. “It’s an easy process and one that saves lives. We are incredibly thankful that MEDARVA has stepped up to help make this happen.”
MEDARVA believes in using its resources to assist the communities and individuals where it provides services. The organization is also dedicated to providing medical care and education to promote overall health, education and well-being. Whether it's events like the Boxer Brief Battle 5k Run or the Sisters Network Gift for Life Block Walk, or our continued involvement with CrossOver Ministry, the Special Olympics and Virginia Voice, our associates are proud to support the needs of their communities by being involved as volunteers.
Other community-based organizations that have benefited from funding from the Foundation include CrossOver Ministries, The Daily Planet and the Scottish Rite Childhood Language Center. Our Foundation is also involved in collaborative ventures with academic institutions, medical organizations and philanthropic groups to fund leading-edge research aimed at achieving important medical breakthroughs.
