Dr. Lyons has special interest in colon cancer prevention because of his own family’s experience with the disease. He treats many different digestive diseases including irritable bowel syndrome, acid reflux, inflammatory bowel disease, bile duct disease, liver disease and cirrhosis. He utilizes lifestyle changes, medications, and endoscopy to improve digestive health. He performs endoscopic procedures including Colonoscopy, Upper Endoscopy, and Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography (ERCP). On average he performs more than 50 endoscopic procedures weekly and in his career has completed more than 20,000 endoscopic procedures. He enjoys learning the evolving roles that endoscopy can provide in the care of his patients. Dr. Lyons has been selected on numerous occasions to lecture to his colleagues, at grand rounds, and to nursing organizations about digestive disease and management. He frequently presents an educational program “GI jeopardy” to engage his audience and help teach about gastroenterology.

Dr. Lyons completed his medical school training and residency in Internal Medicine at Medical College of Virginia. He was then selected for a competitive fellowship in Gastroenterology and liver disease, also at the Medical College of Virginia. This training allowed 3 years of experience in diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy, screening colonoscopy, and the care of patients with digestive and liver disease. Dr. Lyons was selected by his residency colleagues to serve as Chief Resident, an honor which was repeated a few years later in his training when the faculty selected him to serve as Chief GI Fellow as well.

Dr. Lyons grew up in Roanoke, Virginia. He met his wife in Richmond while attending college. They have been married 20+ years and now have five children. Dr. Lyons was a competitive swimmer in his youth and in the summer serves as referee at his children’s recreational league swim meets.
