
Guilherme M. Campos, MD, FACS, FASMBS
Dr. Campos is Professor of Surgery and Chairman of the Division of Bariatric and Gastrointestinal Surgery at Medical College of Virginia, Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU). He specializes in minimally invasive surgery for esophageal and gastric diseases, abdominal wall hernias (inguinal, ventral and umbilical), gallbladder diseases and obesity treatments.

Practice
He started his career in the U.S. when he joined the faculty at the University of California in San Francisco (UCSF) as the Director of the Center for Gastrointestinal Motility and of the Bariatric Surgery Program. At UCSF, he re-structured the Bariatric Surgery Program and had a NIH funded Multidisciplinary Research Program. At UCSF he trained 15 clinical fellows in Advanced Minimally Invasive, Gastrointestinal and Bariatric surgery. Dr. Campos moved to Richmond in the March of 2015, coming from University of Wisconsin (UW) in Madison, where he had moved in 2009. At UW-Madison, he expanded the scope of practice of that Department of Surgery to include therapeutic upper gastrointestinal endoscopy, novel Minimally Invasive techniques to treat Reflux Disease (GERD), and other advanced surgical and endoscopic techniques. He was also responsible for starting the Gastrointestinal and Bariatric Fellowship Program at that institution. In Richmond, he joined VCU as the Professor of Surgery and Chairman of the Division of Bariatric and Gastrointestinal Surgery at Virginia Commonwealth University and also serves as the Director of the Bariatric Surgery Program and the Director of the Minimally Invasive Surgery Fellowship.Education
A native of Brazil, Dr. Campos is a graduate of the University of Parana School of Medicine in Brazil. Dr. Campos completed his surgical training in the U.S. as a Chief-Resident in General Surgery and as a Clinical Fellow in Minimally Invasive and Esophageal Surgery at the University of Southern California (USC) Medical Center in Los Angeles in 1999; and is Board Certified by the American Board of Surgery.Profile
Dr. Campos is an active swimmer and runner, and enjoys cooking, preferably grilling a good steak. He has traveled abroad numerous times to operate during medical missions and demonstrate surgical techniques to others during courses and medical meetings.Locations
