Experience

Dr. Scott Woogen is a board certified Gastroenterologist practicing with Richmond Gastroenterology Associates for over twenty years. Dr. Woogen serves as a Clinical Professor of Medicine for the Medical College of Virginia and additionally is a member of the American Society of Internal Medicine, the American Gastroenterological Association, the Virginia Gastroenterological Society, Richmond Academy of Medicine, and the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation.

Practice

Dr. Woogen treats patients with a variety of digestive and hepatobiliary conditions, as well as other issues affecting the gastrointestinal tract. He specializes in diseases of the liver treating patients with cirrhosis, hepatitis B, and hepatitis C with up-to-date treatment options. He also cares for patients with inflammatory bowel disease including ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease. Dr. Woogen is skilled in multiple endoscopic procedures including Colonoscopy, Upper Endoscopy (EGD), Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography (ERCP), Ultrasound guided liver biopsy, and Endoscopic stenting. He is also one of a select group treating Barrett’s esophagus with Radiofrequency Ablation (RFA). He performs over 2,400 procedures annually. In December of 2013 he was honored by Our Health magazine for “Best Bedside Manner” in Gastroenterology

Education

Dr. Woogen graduated Magna Cum Laude from Colombia University in 1977 where he was a member of Phi Beta Kappa. He followed with medical school at New York School of Medicine where he graduated in 1981 and was a member of the Alpha Omega Alpha, an honor medical fraternity. Upon graduation he was offered a residency at the Medical College of Virginia becoming board certified in Internal Medicine in 1984. He also completed his fellowship in Gastroenterology at the Medical College of Virginia and became Chief Fellow in 1986. While Chief Fellow, he was awarded a grant for Intestinal Immunology Research from the National Institutes of Health. After completing his fellowship, Dr. Woogen was board certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine-Gastroenterology in 1988 and began his career as an Assistant Professor at the Medical College of Virginia. While teaching he published research articles in medical journals including the Journal of Immunology. In addition, he was also a staff physician at the McGuire Veterans’ Hospital in the GI Division and Medical Director of the Chesterfield County Nursing Home. He joined Richmond Gastroenterology Associates in 1994.

Dr. Woogen is originally from the Bronx and enjoys spending time with his two children. He enjoys multiple sports, including football, golf, hockey and harness horse racing.
