Your hand is a complex machine of bones, muscles, nerves, ligaments and skin. It needs to be able to make both large and small movements, grasp and hold, point, and to do whatever you need it to do without stiffness or pain. Hands are remarkably strong and sturdy, but, like any other part of your body, may be injured by accident or have pain from other conditions such as arthritis or carpal tunnel syndrome. The treatment team is headed by a hand surgeon, trained in this subspecialty. Medications and physical therapy provided by specially-trained hand therapists are usually given first – often with success -- and the delicate and detailed surgery of the hand is provided when needed.
